Use an accessory! The vast majority of radios are damaged from being dropped all the time.
When you use an accessory like a speaker mic, earpiece or headset the radio stays clipped to your belt so it can't get dropped anymore.
If you are not able to use an accessory then the second best thing is to use a swivel holster. This allows you to easily take the radio off and put it back on your belt and also protects it from wear and tear.
