True Story: How “The Demo” Program Was Born

Not long ago, I received a phone call from a woman who oversaw an after-school program. She needed some two-way radios, had the budget to purchase them, but didn’t know anything about radios. I quoted her a price, and she instantly became skittish; suddenly reluctant to purchase. She didn’t believe professional grade RCA radios could be purchased for such a low price. In fact, she got a case of the “you get what you pay for” bug, and therefore didn’t feel comfortable making the purchasing decision on her own. So, she called in the school’s radio expert. The next thing I know, I’m talking with the school district’s Director of Risk and Emergency Management who also happens to be the Section Emergency Coordinator for Orange County’s Amateur Radio Emergency Service along with possessing a master’s degrees in Emergency Disaster Management and Technical Communications. The man knew two-way radios, but he didn’t know anything about RCA two-way radios.
